Aaron Draplin is a graphic designer with proud Midwestern roots. He runs his own studio out of Portland, Oregon where he works on a variety of ass-kicking projects, including the ever-popular memo books: Field Notes. You may have seen him rant about why America is F*cked, graphically speaking. Through all of his experiences and travels, Aaron reminds tells us how he got his start, and how you can, too.

While you're still looking for your design job, stay creatively busy.
Very inspiring.
Happy I have a great job and will not settle. Keep your mind staying busy! Keep it up! Keep it up! Keep it up!
Being that poor, post-grad, jobless designer, I definitely appreciate hearing this sort of thing. It’s good to be reminded I’m not alone in having to “cut my teeth” with the less-than-glamorous type of work, especially with the economy as it is.
Thanks!
hahaha, good stuff, I liked how this guy has got so much passion but doesn’t give a shit either. nice one!
This video is probably some of the best advice so far! I’m totally that post-grad lookin’ for work. It’s good to know that I’m also pretty much doing what he says. Staying creative till I get a job.
Gotta love him making faces at the cam. Good advice tho, love work, work all the time, make sure at least some of it pays, but always do the work you love.
Couldn’t agree more with the advice given. Thanks!
“Embrace being the lowest amoeba on the food chain wherever you get in…” Love how he put that! Great advice, like he said it’s ‘vital’ to stay in it, and you can stay in it no matter what you do, as long as it’s your passion. Eventually, it will take over in a profitable way.
Great advice. Not only is he talented and passionate; but he seems like someone you could sit down, share a beer with, and learn a lot from.
We all get caught up in the day to day and sometimes lose sight of why we chose this career path in the first place–because it’s what we love.
…go on road trips and look at America and rescue things and look at stuff…
Awesome.
I love his honesty and lack of pretension. His advice inspires hope.
